Why We Sell Wine by the Six

A case of wine is usually twelve bottles. Ours is six. The six applies per wine, so a case is six bottles of the same thing rather than a mixed selection, it ships free anywhere in South Africa in three working days, and it works out at between R120 and R480 a bottle depending on which wine you choose.

That is not a technicality. It changes what you pay, what arrives at your door and how long it lasts, so it is worth two minutes before you order.

So is a case of wine 6 or 12?

How many bottles are in a case of wine depends on who is selling it. Twelve is the retail standard and it is what most shops and most of the internet mean by the word. Six is what a number of South African producers mean, ours included, and every case ships free.

A case is twelve, except when it is six

Twelve is the old standard and it comes from the cellar, not the customer. A 225-litre barrel fills almost exactly twenty-five cases of twelve, and twelve-bottle cases stack neatly onto a pallet. It is a number that suits the people moving the wine.

A 225-litre barrel fills 300 bottles, which is 25 cases of twelve or 50 cases of six.

Six suits the people drinking it. Six bottles is enough to put two or three wines on a table over a few months without committing to a case of one wine you have not tasted yet. It is also light enough that a courier can carry it up a flight of stairs without a trolley.

We settled on six for the second reason.

What six bottles costs, and what that is per bottle

Our prices are quoted per case of six, with the per-bottle figure alongside. Here is the whole range as at September 2026.

The range runs from R120 to R480 a bottle. That is a four-fold spread, and it is the honest shape of a small farm: the Blended White is made to be opened on a Tuesday, and the Conclusion is made to be kept.

The rules, in full

  • The minimum order is six bottles.
  • Orders are in multiples of six, per wine.
  • Delivery is free, anywhere in South Africa, with no minimum order value.
  • Three working days, direct to your door, from our cellar in Stellenbosch.
  • You get a confirmation email with tracking as soon as the wine leaves us.

The six applies per wine, not per order. A case is six of the same wine. If you want two wines, that is two cases, and the free delivery still covers the lot.

How long six bottles actually lasts

The honest answer is that it depends on the wine, and it is the reason we would rather you took six of something than one of everything.

A Sauvignon Blanc or a Blended White is at its best young. Six bottles of either is a summer, not a cellar. Our Sauvignon Blanc is worth drinking now or over the next three to four years.

The reds are a different question. The Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot will keep developing for three to five years, the Cabernet Sauvignon for six to eight, and the Syrah has the structure to mature over the next decade. Six bottles of any of those is not a case to finish. It is a case to open one of, now, and then leave alone and come back to.

That is what a six does that a single bottle cannot. You get to taste the same wine twice, two years apart, and find out what it became.

If you are buying for someone else

Our gift sets are the one exception to the six. They come as curated twos and threes, because a gift is a different thing to a delivery of wine for your own shelf. If you want to send someone six, a case of any single wine does that perfectly well and arrives with the same free delivery.

Ordering your first case

Pick one wine to drink and one wine to keep. That is twelve bottles, two cases, one delivery, and it costs nothing more to have them arrive together than separately.

If you would rather start with one, make it the wine you can open this month. A case you are enjoying now tells you far more about whether to order the serious one than any tasting note we could write for you. The whole range is on one page.
